Planning your Music
Here are a few of the questions I’m most often asked when people are planning a wedding, ceilidh or event. If there’s anything else you’d like to know, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
How far in advance should I book?
Popular dates, particularly between May and September, as well as Christmas, Hogmanay and Burns Night, often book up well in advance. If you already have a date in mind, it’s always worth getting in touch as early as possible.
Which musical option is right for us?
That depends on the kind of event you’re planning and the atmosphere you’re hoping to create.
If you’d like a traditional Scottish ceilidh with dance calling, the Black Isle Ceilidh Band is probably the best choice.
If you’re looking for a lively mix of songs and dancing, The Cavemen combine folk, popular covers and optional ceilidh sets to create a flexible evening’s entertainment.
For smaller gatherings, drinks receptions or more intimate venues, I also perform in a variety of acoustic line-ups, ranging from solo performances to duos and trios featuring folk, traditional, jazz and popular music.
I’m always happy to talk through the different options and help you choose the line-up that best suits your event.
Can we combine songs and ceilidh dancing?
Absolutely. Many couples choose to mix live songs with one or two ceilidh sets during the evening. It gives everyone the chance to join in before returning to the dance floor later in the night.
Can we choose our first dance?
Of course. If your first dance isn’t already part of our repertoire, I’m happy to discuss whether it’s suitable for us to learn in advance. I am also happy to connect a device to play a recorded track through the sound-system.
How long do you normally perform?
A typical evening consists of three 45-minute sets, although this can often be adapted to suit your timetable. I’m always happy to discuss the running order and help plan the evening around things like your meal, speeches and first dance.
Do you provide your own sound system and lighting?
Yes. All the equipment needed for the performance is provided. As a trained sound engineer, I use professional sound equipment suitable for everything from intimate venues to larger wedding receptions and events.
Can you provide music between sets?
Yes. Music can be played through the PA during breaks, and if you’d like the dancing to continue after the band has finished, I can also provide a DJ service or use the PA to play your own playlist.
How much space do you need?
This depends on the size of the line-up, but most venues have plenty of room. If you’re unsure, just let me know your venue and I’ll be happy to advise.
When do you arrive?
I normally aim to arrive around 90 minutes before the performance begins to allow plenty of time for unloading, setting up and carrying out a sound check.
Do you travel?
Yes. I’m based on the Black Isle, near Inverness, and regularly perform throughout the Highlands. For events that are further afield, there are additional logistics to consider such as travel and accommodation, but I am always keen to visit new places and meet new people.
How much does it cost?
Every event is a little different, so I don’t have a fixed price list. The cost depends on factors such as the band or line-up, performance times, travel and any additional services you might need.
If you get in touch with a few details about your event, I’ll be happy to recommend the best option and provide a no-obligation quote.
Can we have a chat before booking?
Absolutely. In fact, I encourage it. Every wedding and event is different, and it’s often much easier to talk through your ideas than exchange lots of emails. Whether you’re not sure which musical option would suit you best, or you’d simply like to discuss how the evening could work, I’m always happy to have a chat.
How do we book?
The easiest way is simply to get in touch. Once we’ve discussed your plans and confirmed availability, I’ll send everything in writing so you know exactly what’s included. If you have any questions along the way, I’m always happy to help.
